Clay Hill, Enfield

We have been contacted by Michael Davies, a history teacher in Enfield, to ask whether or not Hill Lodge, the house in Clay Hill, Enfield still exists where Sir Joseph was born, and if so whether it has a blue plaque.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

Simon

Hi Simon,

Sadly gone. British History Online says Hill Lodge had disappeared by 1972, giving Pevsner as a reference.

In addition:
It stood next to the Fallow Buck public house, which still exists, but Hill Lodge was demolished in 1965, although parts of the original garden wall can still be seen.

The local history librarian Graham Dalling did a lot of research for me on this so Michael should ask them for more details
