Ian Willoughby

Vikki Stewart, who works for Peter Bazalgette, has sent me some details of Jack Catford's memoirs of the pathfinders in the 2nd World War, whicj includes an eyewitness account of Ian Willoughby Bazalgette's crash, for which he won a posthumous VC.

I am awaiting permission to add some pictures and text from the book, but if anyone's interested it is called Birdcage (ISBN Number is 1 873257 49 X)

I have seen in the Canadian Legion in Chetwynd, British Columbia, Canada in 1997 or 1998 a picture with information about Ian Willoughby. I do not recall all the details - I wrote them down on the back of a cardboard coaster. However I do not have ready access to that coaster. It's stored in the east coast of Canada these days and I'm on the western part; namely, in Alberta, Canada. However if you contacted someone at the legion in Chetwynd they might provide you with the information it shows.

I was interested because my maternal grandfather's middle name was Bazalgette and he a had a Col. Bazalgette's name circled in a book and the book stated the Colonel was or had been in India. (The book is back on Prince Edward Island, Canada too.

No one in the family knows why or who he was named after. I do understand there was a Bazalgette in or near Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada where my grandfather Reginald Bazalgette Richardson lived part of his early and later life.

It remains a mystery. I wonder if there are any relatives of the Bazalgette family currently in Halifax who might know? Another things to check into one fine day!
